[b]>C: Keep Talking
Considering it for a moment, you decide that the Funeral will start off well enough without you. The things that you were learning from the Green-Cloak are just too interesting to pass up. You decide on starting off with another question, hoping to get more information without taking so much time that the Funeral ends without you.
"Well, what about you? How did you end up with the Canids?"
He tilted his head for a moment, his thoughtfulness towards the question quite clear.
"Hmm... As I'm sure you may have guessed by my fighting style, I used to be a Hunter. Before I tell you how I joined them however, it should be said that although the Council only learned of them only weeks ago, the Canids have been aware of our existence for years. Almost fifteen years, actually... Do you remember the Yaggan attack, back around that time?"
Your memory is a little hazy because you were so young back then, but you can instantly tell that he is talking about the attacks that had taken Phio's parents from him. You nod, a bit meekly, at this.
"After the Hunters had driven them back, I wanted to take it a step further. Together with some of my friends, we tracked the fleeing Yaggan to their nest in the hopes of keeping them from gaining their strength and attacking again. Our desire to keep the village safe made us walk right into what could only be described as an ocean of the beasts. We fought valiantly, but even a Hunter has his limits. After an hours-long battle, we eventually began to succumb to exhaustion, to the point that we could not even outrun them when we finally decided to flee. I was the last to fall, but I didn't die. As I remember it, there was only one left to chase me, and we both gave each other a mortal blow. I passed out, thinking that I was going to die, and then I woke up in a strange kind of house, made of sliced wood and rounded stones."
Well, that certainly did sound like a strange kind of house indeed.
"When I awoke, you could imagine my surprise when I was greeted by a wolf-like figure. Nobody had ever seen or heard of a Canid before then, I was the first. I would have run screaming if it wasn't for my wounds. Eventually I calmed down, adjusting to the fact that they weren't trying to kill me. I wanted to go back to the Wenta, but they insisted that I stay to heal, telling me that I was too far from our village to walk. During the time that I was resting, one of their Arcane visited me and gave me a cup of glowing liquid to drink. I did as he asked, downing the fluid quickly. Mind you, if they wanted to kill me, they could have done it much faster than with any poison, so it's not as though I felt that I had a choice. It tasted vile, but the drink soon granted me the ability to cast rudimentary magics. The Arcane offered to teach me how to use these powers once I had healed, and I was immediately curious. I ended up finding myself under their training once my wounds finally closed, instead of returning here."
That fully explained why he had first joined them. After all, you probably would have done the same thing if you wanted to learn how to control something as powerful as magic. The thought of power suddenly reminds you that quite a number of Hunters had died today in the defense of the Council Hall, and you suddenly remember the mysterious gems that you had to relinquish to the Green-Cloak and his very large friend earlier.
"What about those gems that you wanted earlier today? What are they?"
"Those... Sorry, but I'm not actually allowed to talk about them. All I can say is that they're used to refill a magic user, I can't give details..."
Well, so much for your slowly-developing trust of the guy...
"Okay, is there anything you can tell me about why half of the Wenta aren't spewing fire right now?"
"What do you mean?"
"I started casting magic after drinking something called Fyre Mead, and it's actually a pretty common alcohol in the village, so I don't understand why others can't do it too."
"I see. From what the Arcane have told me, a rare herb is what unlocks the ability to cast magic- a power that is not exclusive to any species. The only limit to who can use magic power is the individual. Either you can or you can't."
You were about to ask another question until you noticed a smoke cloud coming from the direction of the Temple, indicating that the finalizing ceremonies for the Funeral were starting. You almost panic, knowing that you had just skipped over the entire event, and you'd now only be able to catch any of it by chasing after the attendance through the main gate. Quickly saying bye to green-cloak, you leap down from the roof of the building and land on your paws, quickly sprinting down the street. You wonder how you could have possibly spent so much time talking to this guy as you follow the pillar of smoke to it's source, only barely catching up to the crowd of mourners and Hunters as families carry the casks of their beloved's remains to the gate. Guards stood post at the sides of the gateway while the attendees passed through. You try to blend into the crowd, but you're unfortunate to run into your father near the center of the group, and he has absolutely no problem with causing some noise.
"Ana, there you are! Where have you been? Your friend assured me that you would be here for the opening ceremony!"
You could tell that people were paying attention to the disturbance. After all, there was nothing else to pay attention to except the dead being carried into the jungle.
"I.. I'm sorry, father. I was taking care of a little business, and I hadn't been paying attention to the time. It might please you to know that I've learned a few things about being a diplomat, however."
"Diplomacy, pah! There is nothing to talk with out there except Canids, and they know nothing of such things! Now, I should hope you would show those who've lost their lives in our people's defense a little more respect, Ana. You should not have been so late- if you needed not to come at all, it would be different, but your friend made it perfectly clear that you intended to be here tonight."
You could hear the murmurs of gossip and disappointment among the crowd, passing along what just happened to others further away. The growing pressure in your groin did nothing to help your nerves.
"... Yes, father."
