[b](So, since there was no clear agreement other than between two votes for confronting Ana's father, that is what I'm forced to go with. To anyone who is still reading and refusing to vote, if you're out there, please join in. YOUR VOTES ARE IMPORTANT!)
Part 38
>D: Confront your Father about the Canids
The crowd continues to move through the jungle, not even slowing down as some of the escorting Hunters put down a small Yaggan attack. Nothing would faze the distressed families as they prepare to lay their loved ones to rest. The caskets being carried were, like many other things in the village, made of cooked clay and grass, and carved with decorative insignias and symbols. Unlike most things in the village, however, these were also adorned with torches on each corner- a rare piece of decoration for a tribe of people that could see in the dark. Because your people did not have knowledge of hinges, the casks needed to remain completely open. Deciding that everybody was too busy being sad or keeping Yaggan from devouring the dead, this would be as good a time as any to ask your Father a few questions. Maybe you could compare his reactions to the Green-Cloak's claims.
"Father?"
The older Ocelot was rather slow to turn to you as you both walked among the crowd, probably trying to make sure everything went smoothly with the Funeral.
"Yes, my child?"
"How much exactly do we know about the Canids?"
Naturally, you keep your voice down as you ask the question, trying to make it so that only he could hear. He does the same in his response.
"Other than how bold they are, as they've revealed today, all we knew was that Hunter teams started disappearing a few weeks ago. Entire groups simply failed to make it back to the village. One of these groups, however, had a survivor that made it back to tell us of what he described as pack of walking wolves, ones that controlled fire and lightning. He described the Canids and what they did to the rest of his group. In response, another member of the Council immediately suggested that prepare for the possibility of an incoming attack, and the rest of them agreed. Your Mother and I, as well as two others, were reluctant and went against the decision. Today I found myself rather thankful that we were wrong about that."
Well, that testimony made things a bit difficult. His story both matched and opposed the words of Green-Cloak, making you wonder who was actually telling the truth.
"Yeah, I suppose it's a good thing you were."
He suddenly looks at you with a bit of suspicion in his eyes.
"Why to you ask, dear?"
With your reflexes, you are able to keep a straight face and answer immediately.
"I've been hearing some... conflicted opinions around the village. Some people seem to believe that the Council is planning attacks on the Canids, rather than the other way around."
He didn't react for a moment, seeming to gather his thoughts.
"I see. Well, I have heard no such nonsense among the others in the Council. I would not trust anyone saying these things. As a member of the Council and your Father, I give you my word that if such plans are in place, then I do not know of them."
Despite the calm honesty of your Father's voice, your eyes narrow slightly at his words. He's used this ploy enough times for you to recognize it- 'as a member of the Council,' 'as your Father-' he was asserting his authority over you to make you stop before you went too far into something. Maybe he didn't know about any attempts to fight the Canids, but he did know something that he didn't want you knowing. You suddenly find your mind wandering back to the Council meeting of yesterday, that none of the Hunters were allowed to join.
It doesn't take much longer for the crowds to reach their destination. The entire trip was to reach a small clearing behind the village wall, where a number of stick-marked graves already existed. At least half an hour passes as the Hunters dig out some holes, aided by Temple priests and some of the more willing tribesmen. You remain quiet as the event goes on, trying to ignore the words of the Priests as they lay the fallen defenders to rest. Right now, you just want to gather Phio, Dorza and Dorze, share some info, and figure out where to go from there. Or maybe find some privacy first.
