They're quite intelligent. When I was a kid, I would always take out the book "Tentacles" from the elementary school library, and read it. There were some crazy stories about octopuses in research labs. Like "Thor", who knew his own name, and anyone who walked past his tank without saying "Hello, Thor" would get squirted in the back. And another, whose name escapes me, but who escaped from his tank, and was found in the lab's library, pulling books off shelves and leafing through them.
