Nichole - Gotcha!!?! - Commission - colour
Colour version of Nichole – “Gotcha!!?!” commission
(had to re-upload this, sorry, some sort of glitch....)
Okay, so this took longer than i thought it would...typical for me...
quote from pencil version post:
Jirris' adorable blue skunk Nichole in the old (pre-expansion) style.
I had always wanted to draw her so i wuz jazzed when he commissioned me...and i rushed and did some poses...and then some more...and...nope. Just not happening. I was baffled – why wasn't it working ? Then the clouds parted, horns blared and i appeared to myself in a vision saying “Because they're just 'poses' - she isn't doing anything, you shmuck!!! Tell me a story!” And then the vision of myself slapped me and disappeared.
So i went with a sort of 40's cartoon style scenario – Nichole having a picnic, trying to enjoy her pie when a pesky squirrel shows up....Here she thinks she has trapped the pest under the pie lid (not such a bright idea) and lifts it up to find him gone. Etcetcetc, Hi-jinx ensue, with everyone eventually being covered with pie.
.......
This piece actually started off as a digital colour ruff – then went backwards (so to speak) to become a real media pencil pic intended to go back to the colour version...
but...i couldn't quite figure out the lighting on her yellow pink polkadot outfit – sunlight hi-lights, duh, but there's lots of indirect light from the sky (blue), bounce light off the grass (yellow green), and the blanket (pink)....er...that makes white light???? Took ahile for my tiny brain to realize that the bouce light in closest proximity (the pink blanket) would take precedence – hence her being underlit with pink light.
The background also surprised me by taking on a sort of ancient Chinese colour harmony...
And then i had to keep there from being too many colours fighting for dominance – red, blue, yellow, green – so i toned down all the saturations/chromas and created a limited gamut of hilite colours...
Then the problem of the psuedo-rhododendrons – i had intended to leave them suggested in the pencil and have more of their foliage painted in...but just how....hrmmm...
Oh yeah, and at one point Gimp crashed (left it on over night) and i lost a few hours work...(stooopid!)...
And i wanted the painting to have some tight details and some rough areas...
Then i re-did the polka dots a couple times...grrrr...
Anyway....i think this is final version. For now. Maybe. I don't rule out trying to rework this or that somewhere down the road...

While getting larger size vesion ready to post at dA noticed a few things...
Added a bit of pink bounce light on pie lid.
Followed through clear(green) outlines of exclamation/question mark
Removed a few microscopic dots here and there (prolly didn't show in this small version).

Ah yes, this is the classic Canid Counter Conundrum - While the Feline Faction chases String Theory the Canid culture contends that squirrels are non-compliant frisbees. Perhaps an egalitarian tweet from Hawkings will keep us from ducking out on the issue of nested agendas....uhm...the dogs here seem to be getting a bit upset....perhaps we should drop the subject....(sorry for drool on it, it's still alive...) Pant pant!
i see the old comic thing now that you mention it... The situation came out of wanting to do something like a scene from a late 30's/early 40's animated short (Droopy, Barney Bear, etc etc)...the muted colours were necessary so that i didn't have red-green-blue-yellow fighting with each other in a eye stabbing mess....the background started feeling old Chinese painting to me...but, yeah, could be old animation...or comic book! ^_^
I had forgotten until i looked it up tonight, but there was a Barney Bear episode with slightly similar theme - - a bucket of cherries, not pie; a skunk not a squirrel:

That's how it became a blue and purple polka dot outfit! (Plays the ad...)
"Yes, Rattz dyes can make a young Miss's misadventures into an fashion adventure and make her a young Misses! Get Rattz dyes at your corner grocery store and Five&Dime! And while you're there - remember to buy Bonds! Rattz dyes! - making the Axis blue! And now for our feature film...."

one might say he is being berry, berry naughty. But not if one didn't want to alienate the whole of furdom, the internet, humanity, and life throughout the entire universe by one overly obvious bad pun post. Only Adam West could survive that sort thing. So while "one might say that.." do note that i didn't say that....at least, not as such, as it were.....
Heck, gotta post this link again - forgotten cartoon way in back of mind when doing this (see above reply to Remenbrand):

Replied to a couple posts that i think this cartoon (i'd forgotten about) was in the back of what i laughingly call "my mind" while conceiving this pic:
