There's a nice soft grassy pocket behind her that fits just right.

Actually, I went back in and rolled the grass over more as it got closer to her so it looks more comfortable. Thanks for pointing that out. :D

Oh beautiful to say the last. I always like how you manage to get the illusion of fur to show up even in pictures this far away.

how do you lay the pencil down so smoothly it looks like a painting!

I hate the graininess one can get with color pencils so there is 2 ways I get rid of it. First is to use many layers and or "burnish" an area. The second method that I have adopted recently for large background areas is a lot like painting. I use Polychromos pencils which are oil Based. Then as on the blue background of this latest piece, I roughly filling the area with the base color. (Actually the only color I used there was Sky Blue). Then I will dip a smudge stick into Turpenoid and blend the blue together, it covers evenly and dries quickly and is very much like painting. Then I go back with the sky blue again over areas I want darker. It goes on much smoother over the base coat. I also used it on the grass and rocks to smooth things out and blend colors.

I think each work you complete is an improvement over the last. This is certainly one of the better colored pencil pieces I've seen on FA lately, and that's a lot.
