A survey reward for
- a piece I’ve owed for a long while. I would like to apologise for the delays! I was asked to write a medieval adventure featuring Opal the Koala and Dimitri the Raven, belonging to their friend, going on a medieval adventure for a guild they’re part of.

“I have a question.” She sighed as she turned towards the bird once more.
“What?”
“Why does a Koala wear heavy armour? And a necklace.”
“Why does a bird ride a horse?” He looked down at his mount.
“Touche” He looked towards the horizon, where they were heading. “Where are we heading?”
“To get some treasure from a crypt on the other side of that horizon.” She was significantly slower than her friend, even without his horse, thanks to the large axe she wielded.
Dimitri had been her friend since the day she joined the guild, she was a small creature, slowed by her fondness for sleep and the heavy armour and weaponry that she chose to carry. Other members of the guild pointed out that she was too small to be a strong creature, and with a huff, she decided to prove them wrong. Unfortunately she found herself mocked more, because of her odd diet, her being too young to drink and the fact that twice she had almost wounded her tutor. Dimitri had took it upon himself to take care of her and assist her, with his speedy strikes and light footfalls.
Thanks to him, they had risen up the ranks to be able to take on their first guild quest. The crypt was supposedly inhabited by a group of mercenaries that had been attacking nearby towns. Whilst their main priority was just to take the treasure a few less mercenaries would be worth it. Opal hadn’t said it to Dimitri, but she was nervous being out in the open for the first time since she had joined the guild - when she had arrived at the doors of the place, she was a wreck. The medieval ages were unkind to everyone, but she had been stalked by a fair few hungry predators and found herself hiding in the trees to sleep; she had been attacked by a fair few villagers as she attempted to pilfer some vegetables from their gardens.
They arrived at the crypt to find the outside relatively empty, there were obvious signs of an encampment both nearby and inside the crypt but there were no living beings nearby. Dimitri offered to make the first step into the darkness, and she was more than eager to shove the raven through the door.
“Doesn’t it seem very empty here?” He asked as he began rifling through a random pot found in the centre of the crypt. Whatever once lived here had left. Maybe there was something that had scared them off. He had stopped rifling at the sudden silence that blanketed the chamber followed by the quick scream.
“Dimitri!” She screamed, her voice echoing up the chamber walls that she had found herself in.
“Opal? Where did you go?”
“I fell, down the trapdoor right in front of -ack!” Now she was being crushed under the bird. “Great, can you fly us out now?”
“...No.”
“Why not?”
“Because, dummy, you can just climb onto my back then hop out and pull me up.”
It’s fortunate that she knew Dimitri was both a skilled swordsman and a quiet bird when they were at the guild. If it wasn’t for him, she would be made into even more of a laughing stock. Before they had found the treasure, she had almost fallen prey to a substantial spider monster, after she slipped in a puddle and fell under one of its legs. Dimitri had quickly used her own axe to finish the thing off. He’d also decided to keep the quartz that had fallen from the spider, intending to fashion it into a new necklace for her - considering she’d cracked her old one when she fell into the pit.
She had found a lever, and despite Dimitri protesting otherwise, she had sealed him in a vault he had been searching for gold. She had dropped her axe after freaking out about what she thought was a corpse, but turned out to be a distorted magic field that had altered Dimitri’s form in the reflection, and the barking of a dog that they had disturbed in the main camp on the way out had made her drop a sack of gold coins.
“I’m a mess.” She whimpered.
“Now, now.” The bird teased. “We’re not all perfect.” He winked.
“Hey, how’d the spider drop that quartz?” She was swinging her axe with reckless abandon, her pockets and satchel teaming with gold and gems.
“I don’t know.” Dimitri smiled lightheartedly as he slowly walked both the sleepy koala and his mount back to the guild hall.
“Think we should take a nap before we head back?”
“No!” He yelled a little too loud.
“Why?” She whined.
“Because reasons.”
“Why?”
“What’s with the questions?”
“Now you know how I feel!” She smirked. “Hey, you won’t tell anyone about what went on in the crypt?” He petted her head and continued on the journey.
