Calex Official Reference Sheet 2019
It only took me 16 years of having this character, but I finally have a reference sheet! Huzzah!
This was made by
xashleymx so be sure to go show them some love!
But it's really about time I had one of these done for Calex right? Took the chance to update a few things as well. His catboy form pictures in the past always used his old fur color style while a lot of pictures still had his old eye color. Also gives me a chance to show off each of his most common forms, feral, anthro and catboy. Technically he has a human form as well, as well as a form about halfway between feral and anthro that he spends a ton of time on, but I figured they'd be far too visually indifferent to really result in needing extra pics of.
Anyway I guess since this is the reference for Calex I should probably most some more information on him!
Calex is a six and a half year old werekitten. Unlike many other lycanthrope types he actually owes his shapeshifting powers to a faerie based bloodline. As a result silver means absolutely nothing to him... But he is bothered by iron. Calex does not age beyond the point of six and a half years old, not even through the use of supernatural means to change his age. It is possible to render him younger with some spells... In which he will then age at the same rate as a human until he hits six and a half then promptly stops aging again.
Calex is the original generation werekitten being born from as the offspring of a member of the Cait Sith (a type of faerie) and a mortal shapeshifter, most likely a normal werecat. Like many were creatures he can convert others to werekittens with a bite or scratch. After being bitten or scratched by Calex on the next full moon the victim will transform into a kitten. Like Calex they will not be older than six and a half in human terms. When the full moon sets the victim changes back to their normal age and species.
There are a number of medicines and spells that can cure the werekitten curse and prevent the transformation, as well as just sanitizing the scratch or bite right after it happens will also prevent a curse. If the curse is not treated, then after a person's first transformation they can actually learn to control the change at will. They'll always be forced to become a kitten on the full moon but they can learn to do it at anytime with practice. This does mean that Calex can literally give someone the gift of eternal youth with a scratch. It should also be noted that any werekittens made by Calex will also have the ability to pass on the curse through bites and scratches, as will their victims, and as will theirs and so on.
Calex himself is mostly benevolent even by faerie standards. He means well, and really does want to earn the approval of the various adult figures in his life. Like many children through he has poor impulse control. And being a shapeshifter type creature himself he literally doesn't understand why anyone would think a magical transformation is a bad thing. For him it's just a part of life. Changing into a new species is no different than changing your socks! But now you don't have to do laundry! As a result he has unintentionally caused a few people duress when he was just attempting to play with them or take them on an adventure that he actually thought they would enjoy. If someone clearly tells him they're not interested though, he'll listen. Just be warned that sarcasm is sometimes lost on him. You have to say what you mean. And also be careful of exact words. He is half faerie after all.
Being half faerie and a shapeshifter Calex can amass supernatural energy quite easily. Anytime he is exposed to moonlight his magical powers rise until used. However... He lacks any way to cast even the most basic spells under his own power without aid from others or tools. As a result the only thing he can use his magic for is physical enhancement of his own body, allowing him to show super human displays of strength, agility and endurance. The fuller the moon is, the greater these feats become. Once exposed to the moon the power technically stays with Calex until he uses it up. Think of it as a battery of lunar energy that gets filled each night. Each display of strength drains some of that battery and it has to be refilled again by being exposed to the moon. Having said that, Calex often doesn't have a need to use these said displays of strength in normal day to day life. As a result it's not uncommon for him to have days, weeks, months, sometimes even years of energy stored up. It would probably be a bad thing if he released it all at once.
Calex is a werekitten and thus a shapeshifter. He was born with the natural ability to change between a completely human form and kitten form, and stop anywhere in between. These are the only forms he can change between naturally. However... He's learned to cheat at that a bit. If a third party transforms Calex into another species, such as say a mouse he can use his own shapeshifting to counter it and either maintain his current form, or change back to one of his natural forms. This means if he allows himself to be turned into a mouse he can change back into a kitten at will. Once he's performed this action, he can remember what that form was like and force his body to revert to those changes. Effectively this means Calex can learn to change into new animals by letting others forcefully change his species then just memorizing hot it was done. Learning these new forms is usually exciting and fun so he tends to be highly motivated to mess with things that might result in such shenanigans. And again, Calex has poor impulse control so he doesn't always think ahead when trying to do this.
Currently, Calex lives as a house pet to the detective Odin Ashcroft
odin8898 Though his position might seem more like an assistant or sidekick than a pet. He works as a junior partner at the Ashcroft Investigation Agency and takes his job very seriously. He absolutely idolizes his partner Odin and doing everything in his power to one day be as great a detective as him. He just... Really needs to work on not being as easily distracted in the middle of a mystery.
Also, Calex does not wear pants. He hates clothes in general, seeing them as just something that gets in the way especially when he changes forms. All clothes are disliked but pants are especially extra hated and no force on Earth is powerful enough to make him wear them. Many have tired, all have failed.

Heh I freaking love faerie stuff. There's so, so many good things to use there.
I actually used to run a guild called Cait Sith in SWTOR waaaaaaaay back. Then someone came up to me and is like "Oh that's dumb, you just named your guild after a FF7 character?"
And then I was like "I WILL END YOU!"
Except I'm a small kitten so it was more squeaky and cute.

Kittens can end you :p From both cuteness and the biting. Kitties are the best!
I suppose it's cause they are folklore and not Mythology. The stories are there but don't get the kind of publicity the greecoroman and norse pantheon get. Shame really. Also, where do they think the character got his name from? XD It seems to be a common thing (... well... I only know of two characters, but anyway...) that cait siths in fiction don't take a personal name, just have people call them Cait Sith. The 'cait' in user name here is actually from cait sith XD

I actually wondered about that when I saw you enter Grey in a story and he was a cat.
I've actually seen the Cait Sith show up in a few things... but strangely enough usually in Japanese products. I never see them actually in western stuff despite them being a Celtic myth. Honestly, Celtic legends in general seem to always get the short ends of the stick. We don't get that many big name products with them. Literally only one I can think of off the top of my head is Brave.
Also fun fact, Calex is supposed to have a very slight Scottish accent due to having been born there before at some point moving over to the states and meeting Odin. But I'm terrible at writing accents so it's barely there. (And it's supposed to be barely noticeable anyway)

Yeah XD My avatar is my main pony Seeking Dusk, but the account's named after my cat Grey. :D
Generally I run with the idea that Grey's father was SOMETHING in settings I make him in. He never said and never did anything out of the ordinary, but he's something more than a normal personal. Generally a magical shifter species. Not a cait sith as the celthic myths have it, but a cait sith in the same way a jaguar and tigers are cats. Same type of creature, just not necessarily from the European continent.
Japan tends to be more creative with where they source their lore and myth content from. Western stuff is content with Greecoroman, castle and kingdoms, and if you're lucky, Norse. Japan will draw from Aboriginals of North America, Indian culture, Celtic, (never seen any African from them but, finger's crossed XD) It's a shame really. The world is rich with so much potential and commonalities between them too.
Oh? Awww XD I'm not sure how you would write a scottish accent anyway. Much less a slight one lol

Fun fact, Calex was originally a brown fur with a red hue, you can see this a lot in some of the really early pics where he's a reddish brown, as well as all the catboy pics had red hair. People kept making him more orange over time, and I just kind of ran with it.
Yeaaah if you go waaaaay back

That's what his fur originally looked like.

I mean my size varies! I'm basically the size of a 3 month old cat in feral form, while getting slowly more human sized as I shift from feral to human/catboy. The sizes listed here are... not always 100% correct but just the closest to default. For example, Calex runs around a lot about halfway between feral and anthro, so basically feral walking on two legs and is only about 16 inches tall counting the ears in that form. (Which is where the 16 inches length comes from for feral form)
So he's still pretty small. But it is important to remember that while he's a kitten, he's not a baby kitten so isn't the super small fit in the palm of your hand by default. In human age terms he'd be in grade school.
Granted, once the shrink rays and fountain of youth water balloons come out then he does get down to the sizes you're probably thinking of. :p

Calex stays warm during cold weather by growing in his winter coat and using his catboy form a bit less...
Or by clinging to someone else who is warm... Or getting turned into a dragon that can breathe fire or something... Or some other creative way that doesn't involve clothes.
As for water... He likes it when it's his idea. He suggests a water balloon fight then he's all for it. Someone surprises him with water... Not so much.

Usually try to reply faster, but I've sadly been in very poor health these last two years.
And hey, clothes are extremely impractical for someone who might be running on two legs one second and four the next at any given moment. Just a hazard to get tangled up in and cause you to trip! What happens if you trip cause you were wearing pants when you shifted to feral form to run faster to try to get away from a giant boulder trap that went off! I mean I'd probably just break the boulder... But I wouldn't have to worry about that cause no pants so I could easily outrun it to safety.

Varies. He really likes apples, especially apple juice, which I know is a strange choice for a cat but not a kid. Pretty fond of sweets in general, except for cinnamon which is too strong a flavor for him. Likes sushi, but very pick about other fish and how it's prepared. Enjoys chicken and beef, cause wouldn't be a cat if he wasn't a carnivore. Likes sodas and teas but isn't allowed to have any with caffeine in them because he'll go into an overstimulated overdrive which he has no memory of after the fact. Surprisingly fond of carrots, possibly because he's been turned into a rabbit several times. XD
