This one is an ongoing gift for one of my close friends! It started out as actual bees that I had found passed away. I was attempting to preserve them, unfortunately the first gift to him just kind of became bee floaties in a bottle. Each one had such a personality though, that this image was inspired. The quick color sketch just sat on my computer for a good amount of time, but this year his birthday was a particularly rough one (that’s… an understatement). It was kind of a wakeup call, if I have an idea for a piece for someone, time on earth is limited, just friggin’ do it!
The original was done in marker, ink, gold pen, and the wings have the added touch of the near impossible pigment to photograph, chameleon pigment. It’s so worth it though, in one light it’s gold, but shifted just right, the wings have a hint of violet. (I’ll post more pics of that part later).
The title is a wordplay on the alchemical principle, “As above, so below.” But also, that principle has some deeper meaning for myself on this piece, (more of the meaning is on my Patreon page). I sure do hope my buddy finds some meaning in this piece as well, even if it’s just a nice piece of art to look at! At least this one won’t turn into bee floaties. ;)
