A couple of years ago, my in-law's were about to move to a retirement home. All their stuff was moved out, but on the last day, just prior to leaving, Bob was being transferred home after his kidney dialysis when the ambulance men dropped him. He fell on the street off the stretcher, it fell on top of him and he was badly injured. He suffered through the night and we went to see him in the hospital. He was on a ventilator, drugged. His hands were like a plastic bag full of cold water. Although my wife had high hopes for him - I knew it was the last time I'd see him. I saluted the fallen old soldier who I'd know for nearly 30 years when my wife couldn't see. He died that night, his lungs full of blood. Yes, there is a lawsuit pending.
My mother-in-law had to move to her new place alone. After the funeral, the retirement home had their yearly butterfly ceramony to honor those who had passed away. Mother saved a lone butterfly so when we came to visit her, we all could let the butterfly go together. Bob's butterfly awoke on Mother's plant outside while we watched until it grew strong and flew away. As she had said in the last moments before his coffin was sealed forever, my dear wife said: "Goodbye Daddy."
