Raffle prize for Vulpelibrorum on twitter! Really vibed with the character (a classy pipe smoking fox that likes scifi? Heck!) and their style, so I ended up going a bit overboard by including their car, a 1957 Studebaker Hawk!
Maaan I don't draw cars often, I think this is the second one, and I was sweating bullets a bit while painting because I didn't want to mess up!

When I was in High School, (way back in 1975-78) I wanted to be a car designer. I was in drafting class and my teacher let us draw whatever we wanted. I could draw cars as long as I drew a few Corvettes for him. One day, he got me pissed so I drafted on the rear of a 1977 Corvette, the rear windshield of a 1971-73 boat tail Buick Riviera. To say he was not pleased was an understatement. Anyway... I love tail fins , chrome, and unique designs, (case in point, Studebakers, and the infamous Edsel) and unfortunately, safety standards pretty much restricted what you could design. Why nowadays, all the cars, with few exceptions, all look the same. That angry, insect headlight look. Don't get me started on the Lexus's grill, looks like a very bad modern, updated front end of a 1961 Plymouth.
Oh man, I bet that must have looked....interesting :'D haha. That's pretty cool though. I agree that the vast majority of modern car designs have become too homogeneous and boring.
Not only are most cars lacking in cool shapes and chrome, but even the paint colors have shifted to mainly neutrals and that makes me sad. It feels hard to imagine that most people fantasizing about a new car would be thinking "I want a beige one!".
I get that designers now are working with a lot more safety regulations but I bet brands probably restrict how crazy the designs can look, as well (that's just a guess, though).

Not just the corporate bean counters, but also sales. Since everyone has jumped on the SUV bandwagon, sedans and coupes have been discontinued or sell poorly. I have a 2016 Buick Verano, and I love it. They stopped making it here, but it goes on in China. After this model year, Buick will not have any cars... just SUV's, so if I wind up (unlikely) getting a newer car, it will wind up with a low mileage sedan.
