“If the slayer thinks that he slays, or if the slain thinks that he is slain, both of these know not. For It neither slays nor is It slain.”
Katha Upanishad, Verse 1.2.19-20
Personal piece, both done as a homage to my favorite life forms usually associated with death, and as an avenue to experiment with some new materials. I actually finished this piece twice! Originally it was set to release in fall of 2020, but quite literally I went to save the last stroke, and my computer crashed. 2020 was such a painful year, I finished it again, just to prove that if you get knocked down, as long as you’re still breathing, you CAN get up again and keep moving.
Fitting for the theme of the piece. Death is certainly one of the most terrifying unknowns. Yet personally, I take comfort in knowing that the matter of my body will take another form. Many turn away from the animals, plants, and fungi that break down dead matter, but to me they hold a special spot. Featured here is the Cinereous Vulture, Dermestid Beetle, and my favorite fungi! Through death, new life can be made.
Prints of this one are now up in the online shop, including fancy limited edition prints which I'll post more about later: https://www.etsy.com/listing/967699.....vulture-beetle

They really do! The innovation happening with them is fascinating. Plus, I love that they're mostly unseen. There's something really cool about walking out into a forest, feeling spongy mycelium underfoot, and then wondering if there's a giant life form hiding underneath, haha!
