First in a series of Archangels, a commission done for a close friend of mine! The original concept was to have it as a series of bookmarks, stay tuned to the end to see the final product. Much of the symbolism comes from a western magical background, although throughout the pieces I add some more traditional bits of symbolism, and symbolism which is personal. Those of you who are in to western magic might recognize some of the attributions. ;)
Raphael’s name can be translated as “God healed”, which is the feel we aimed for in the character. The Western Meadowlark is symbolism which isn’t traditional, but the commissioner and I each had a special bird held by Raphael, which has significant meaning to us. You all get to see my special bird! I grew up listening to them in the open space our house backed up to. Their song instantly calls up feelings of morning, light, and warmth for me.
