From a library in the modern Gold Ring, S'Age, the commissioner's Southern Sergal who works as a librarian, wearing traditional Southern Sergal robes akin to that of a Greek toga, is sorting some scrolls there.

This piece was ordered with the commissioner's intention to be a lore-friendly depiction, and I tried my best to set everything as the canon-compliant design that can be seen in the modern era of Gold Ring.

The artwork is themed on a library and there is a good amount of knowledge to tell how "library" looks like in Vilous Universe.

Libraries and recording media in Gold Ring

From ancient times, Gold Ring has traditionally practiced engraving letters on the stone plate to record important matters such as names and general history. The importance of stone plates had even influenced how the nation was built and stone is also one of the representative symbols to express what is Gold Ring. For example, the Gold Ring's law is rooted in the symbolic elements of stone, such as firmness and steadiness. Due to this, we considered the stone plates are essential to express the GR library, so the lower left shelf displays a line of stone plates.

Stone plates still have been the most major and primary material used to do these tasks in Gold Ring up to the present day, meanwhile, paper is a relatively new material in the nation. Until the folks have developed a good technology of papermaking and reached a social situation that convenience of paper is strongly required, the paper was rather rare and minor material, at least until reached after year 70 of the Rain Calendar.

The presence of scroll is strictly confirmed, however, how many scrolls are available and popular is not defined yet. At least it would fit Vilous' style pretty much and we assume the modern Gold Ring would have some amount of them.

Also, libraries in Gold Ring feature unique aspects that are similar to that of museums, showcasing actual materials themselves too, such as stones, fossils, etc, not only to carry recording media. The table of materials behind the shelves depicts that.

Paper in Planet Tal

Paper in Planet Tal would take a totally different form from those of Earth, as same as other Tal-specific materials. The paper is made of various exotic and alien Talyxian materials even including stuff that is not a tree, due to this, the majority of it may even not be "paper" technically. Papyrus or Parchment from real life is a good example of this.

The lore creator Kiki-UMA mentioned there is a Washi equivalent also, which is traditional Japanese paper that uses local fiber, processed by hand and made in the traditional manner.

Due to this, common paper in Tal would display more or less alien and exotic hues and texture rather than pure white and smooth paper unlike what you can find here.
