It had all come down to the final fight. Knuckles was standing on the right side in his gi with blue gloves and pads. Walking along on the other side of the mat came a new challenger - Espio. The committee was surprised when Espio signed up for the karate event at the 2020 Olympics. In the past, Espio was always the referee or the cameraperson. Although he competed in the Triple Long Jump, some of the Freedom Fighters were shocked when they heard Espio entered the Karate competition. It was as if no one knew of Espio's experience in martial arts.
Espio wanted others to know that he wasn't going to stand on the sidelines anymore. Now was his turn to show everyone, including any watching from home that he wasn't only good at jumping really high. Espio stood on the red mark while Knuckles did the same on his end. Both leaned forward bowing to each other in a sign of respect. They jumped slightly in the air bouncing on the balls of their feet and toes before crouching in their respective fighting stances. Knuckles with his left hand and foot forward with his right foot further back and his right hand in the air. Espio in a similar stance though crouched a little lower with his right foot forward and his right hand in front of his face. Both stared at each other intently trying to predict what the other would do. Everyone in the audience on the edge of their seats as most had thought Knuckles would come out victorious. Amy, Silver and Shadow even bet that Knuckles was going to take the gold.
As Espio and Knuckles didn't lose focus on each other, the referee yelled out "Hajime!" Knuckles moved forward and went for a left hook, but Espio dodged to the left leaning towards his left side. Espio pressed his feet harshly onto the mat, tightened his right fist launching an uppercut right underneath Knuckles' mouth. Knuckles couldn't dodge in time as he now felt that glove push underneath his mouth, his eyes widen as his body launches up in the sky only to fall down with a resounding thud out of the circle.
"Yame!" yelled the ref.
Espio relaxed his stance. Knuckles growling and grunting as he attempted to get back on his feet. Slowly, he was standing up and shook his head. Espio went back to his mark while Knuckles rubbed underneath his muzzle and walked back toward his mark. The ref wanted to check if Knuckles was OK, but Knuckles pushes him slightly against him muttering that he was fine. Once Espio and Knuckles were on their respective marks, they got back to their respective stances. Knuckles had both fists raised in front of his face with both of his feet separate from each other as he bounced a couple of times. Espio moved his left foot forward this time with his left hand in front of his face. He positioned his right foot horizontally and kept it slightly afar from his left foot while his left hand was closer to his stomach. Both staring at each other with more intensity in their eyes.
"Hajime!" yelled the ref.
Knuckles kept his guard up while bouncing left to right. Espio was waiting for Knuckles to make a move, but Knuckles kept his distance. This time, Knuckles was going to wait for Espio. Espio obliged and pushed his right foot harshly on the mat rising his left foot for a kick at Knuckles' stomach only for Knuckles to dodge to his left and wrap his arms around that ankle. Espio's head slightly moved back surprised. Knuckles pulled that leg forward making Espio stumble forward.
"Gahk!" came out of Espio's mouth when his chest made contact with Knuckles' horizontal left arm. Espio's back hit the mat laying spread-eagle giving Knuckles an opening to crouch down and launch a punch at Espio's stomach.
"Yame!" yelled the ref.
Knuckles stepped backward to his mark. Espio slowly got back up rubbing his stomach. Back on his feet, Espio moved back towards his mark. Once both were at their marks, Knuckles went back to his prior stance with his fists in front of his face and bouncing right and left. Espio positioned his left foot behind his right foot with his right hand closer to his leg. His left hand slightly higher but closer to his side.
"Hajime!" yelled the ref.
Knuckles went with the same strategy but bouncing on his feet two or three times more in the same spot to be less predictable. Espio kept his eyes on Knuckles and struck a quick jab at Knuckles' face only for Knuckles to block it with both hands. Knuckles followed up with a right jab. Espio blocked with his left hand, then swept with his right foot against Knuckles' feet. Knuckles' feet were swept from under him as the next sound heard was a resounding thud on the mat. Espio stood over Knuckles and launched a punch at Knuckles' chest.
"Yame!" yelled the ref.
Espio went back towards his mark as Knuckles coughed from that strike. He coughed a couple of times before stopping and getting back to his feet. Knuckles rubbed his chest and went back to his mark. For this round, Knuckles positioned his left foot forward and kept his right foot closer behind it. He moved his left fist forward while keeping the right one closer to his chest. Espio spread his feet apart with his left foot forward, his left hand out in front, and his right hand closer to his chest.
"Hajime!" yelled the ref.
Knuckles moved forward and launched his right foot upward towards Espio's muzzle, but Espio blocked it with his right hand. Knuckles went for a right hook at Espio's face but Espio dodged it again. Suddenly, the room got darker and everything around Espio seemed frozen in time as the camera moved on its own. Knuckles was stunned when something glowed all around Espio. It was as if his own aura shined brightly in a mix of pink and violet. Time seemed frozen as Espio spread his arms apart, positioned his body towards his left, his arms move closer back to his body on their respective sides, he lifted his right foot and extended his leg.
"OOF!" came out of Knuckles when Espio landed that kick at his stomach.
Knuckles hunched over but Espio was moving too fast for even the ref to see what was happening. Some in the audience could still spot Espio's moves as he pushed his right foot back on the mat, twisted his body around, lifted his left foot and aimed a roundhouse kick at Knuckles' face.
BAM! is what it sounded like as a sudden flash of violet and pink objects appeared out of nowhere when Espio's foot made contact with Knuckles' face. Knuckles spun around a few times on the mat, his body leaning backwards as his shoulder blades hit the mat. His arms followed suit with his feet in the air immediately falling on the mat.
"Yame!" yelled the ref.
The ref went to check on Knuckles who was completely out of it as the swirls in his eyes was a dead giveaway. The ref moved his right arm towards Espio announcing him as the winner. Espio was the one who'd come out of there with a gold medal, rather than interviewing the winner. He set out to acknowledge his strength as a warrior and he did just that. Espio was overwhelmed with excitement and walked toward Knuckles. He moved his left foot and placed it on Knuckles' chest. Knuckles was too out of it to even know what was going on right now. Espio raised his fist and celebrated his win as the spotlight was shining on him now. The Omochao wanting to get some words from the future gold medalist.
The audience went nuts....or at least some did. Silver had a palm over his face knowing that he just lost the bet. Blaze was so disappointed in Knuckles while Marine couldn't believe Espio won the match! Rouge was so happy that Knuckles was beat, especially when Shadow was going to have to pay her. Shadow just shrugged it off like he always does when upset while Omega acknowledged how much he had to pay Rouge now.
Vector and Charmy cheering their hearts out for their fellow detective, teammate and good friend. Amy was even more surprised than Marine that Knuckles lost and was now going to have to sell even more of her figurines to pay her bet. Sonic was clearly happy that Knuckles was down for the count as Tails just slightly chuckled and...somewhat agreed with him. Orbot couldn't believe it either. Cubot was trying to figure out what just happened, which was annoying Metal Sonic more than when he lost in the event earlier that day. Cream hoped Knuckles was okay while Big watched but Cheese just kept cheering for Espio wanting to see even more action.
