She gives and she takes life; she is the keeper of all the cat souls and more. Though her temples and festivals may have disappeared roughly two thousand years ago, Bastet's worship is still alive and kicking, for it lives on in millions of living rooms across the world!
If you have not heard of her before, Bastet is the Egyptian cat goddess. Yes, they really did have a cat goddess (at least in the last thousand years) in Ancient Egypt, it's not just a made-up pop culture thing. I've been reading a lot of books about cats lately, and two of them described Bastet. One of the books also mentioned that the typical tabby cat fur pattern is not just the 'default' one for cats, it is also the only that existed up until about a thousand years ago! I'm not sure if it's actually true, but according to that theory, black cats, white cats, black-and-white cats, calico cats, red cats and so were unheard of before the 10th century CE. Because of that, and also because I love how they look (seriously underrated in my opinion), I made Bastet's fur deliberately brown tabby here, with special attention to making it look as natural as possible.
Her outfit here is the one seen on the Wikipedia article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baste.....ile:Bastet.svg - the uploader did not mention what this drawing might be based on, but I'm gonna guess it's not actually based on any real Ancient Egyptian art - Bastet was initially depicted as a lion, in fact, and I've only been able to find ancient Bastet art where she's depicted as a regular (non-anthropomorphic) cat. But the outfit looks sufficiently Ancient Egyptian, so why not?
