Using an Integ (Integration Module) attached at the neck, they've remapped part of their neural bandwidth from their lower legs and right arm to control a proxy! The proxy is an extension of their body, and the user can see through its eyes, move its body, feel its sensors.
Having several integrated machine brackets replacing parts of their body, each attached by Integration Module, the Mechanist carries robot fuel everywhere - thanks to extreme efficiency, not much is required, even for marathon distances.
Should they run out, fuel is abundant and easy to synthesize...
This is an example of a partial integration that allows a person to trade part of their humanity - or body integrity - for machine power - and is an alternative to the Operator Integration that Living Mechs require.

Also... when the controller (the mechanist) blinks, their proxies tend to blink too - one of the last reflexes one would learn to separate.
