The Queens of the Ascendant Hive serve as the focal point of local hivemind networks, and they use their intense psionic powers to weave the discordant jumble of minds into one cohesive symphony. Their capacity for faster-than-light telepathy also allows them to connect local networks of Hive organisms with the intergalactic presence of the Hivemind, and the will of the Empress. A Hive without a Queen is isolated--but with a mind of a Queen coordinating them, any group of Hive will fight with the full presence of the Hivemind. In addition, they contain within their bodies the capacity to produce any imaginable item or organism, given access to the right nutrients--and thought the process of spawning (or assimilating) new hive members is usually performed en masse by the Hiveship, a single Queen can build a new hive from scratch. And though almost never seen outside the safe heart of their Hiveships, their psionic might is powerful enough to crush or dominate all but the sturdiest of foes.
The coloration of a Queen's chitin can take many colors (though is nearly always mostly gray), the design of their crest invariably varies between individuals, and many Queen's have custom adaptations to help them perform their roles based on the needs of their hive. Hands, for instance, are a common (but not universal) deviation from the base Queen pattern. That said, all possess elaborate crests of fins and antennae that allow them to perform their hive-nexus role, all possess highly developed minds capable of incredibly swift decisions, all possess extraordinary psionic abilities, and all possess the elaborate abdomen capable of producing any compound or organism known to the hivemind.
