Alex was reading the newspaper when he heard the doorbell ring. "Now who can that be?" He opened the door and found a package wrapped in brown paper. He brought it into his house and unwrapped it. He found a white, cardboard box and opened the lid. The inside contents were a pink dog collar and an note. Alex read the paper, "Wear it well. --X". Alex wondered what it meant. He decided to try the dog collar on. It wasn't too snug on him. Alex looked at himself in the mirror to see how it looked. As soon as he did, the image in the mirror changed from his living room to a grassy park.
"What the--?" Alex said confused. He looked away from the mirror and found himself in the grassy field. "How did I get here and who in the heck is Mr. X?" No sooner than he said this, the dog collar began to shimmer. A brown tail poked a hole right through his shorts. Alex's ears grew longer and longer until they drooped. They were a medium brown color. Alex felt his ears and looked everywhere to see the changes he was going through. He found a puddle and saw his reflection. He gasped when he saw his long ears. He suddenly felt his clothing was getting baggy on him. Alex saw his pants about to fall but he hastily held them up. He realized he was getting shorter and smaller. Brown fur began to cover his face and his mouth stretched into a muzzle. Long, female lashes grew. His spine began to shift causing him to be unable to stand on two legs. His hans and feet morphed into dog paws. His eyes became a shade of blue. He got even shorter and he felt his masculinity transition to femininity. She eventually became so short all her clothes fell off. Alex peered into the puddle once more and saw he was now a cocker spaniel. Two pink bows appeared on her ears. "Woah!" Alex cried but to the humans around her was only barking noises. However, someone nearby did understand what she was saying. Another cocker spaniel (looking just like her) strolled on over to Alex.
"Hello, there, I don't remember seeing you here before." the cocker spaniel said. "My name is Nutmeg Dash, who are you?"
"Um, my name is Alex." she answered. "How is it that I can understand you?"
"All animals can understand what each other is saying. Humans; however, cannot--except for Blythe Baxter." the dog explained. "My name is Nutmeg Dash, my owner's name is Youngmee. She is over there talking to Blythe." Nutmeg gestured over to a brown hair girl talking to another girl with black hair. "Where's your owner?"
"I don't have one exactly." Alex replied blushing.
"But you are wearing a collar and tag. Is that to fool the dogcatcher?" Nutmeg asked. "If so, that would be a pretty cool trick."
"Not, exactly." Alex explained. I saw the dog collar and read a letter to put it on, and then I got transported here. The said person called themselves 'Mr. X'"
"Hmm, a mystery person. Well, let's go see if we can find your mystery man." Alex and Nutmeg walked around the park.
Nutmeg looked around and asked Alex questions. "How did you get the collar in the first place?"
"In a package at the front door. I was human once and the collar changed me into a cocker spaniel girl. The note in the box read 'Wear it well.' "
Nutmeg sat and thought. "Well, it sounds to me like the mystery man may not be a bad guy. He might be a wizard or something. Did you bring the note with you?"
Alex walked back to where she first appeared and found the note. "Here it is!"
Nutmeg sniffed the note. "Aha! I got the scent. Now let's find your man!" The cocker spaniels sniffed the air and found a similar scent. They ran over to an old man in a gray suit.
The man looked down at the two. "So, you found me." the guy said. "Congratulations!"
"You turned me into a cocker spaniel, why?" Alex asked.
"He can understand us?" Nutmeg asked.
"Blythe isn't the only person in this world who can understand dogs, cats, and other animals." the old man winked. "I am a sorcerer who makes magic dog collars that can turn humans into animals."
"But why did you send it to Alex?" Nutmeg asked.
"Well, I've been wanting to help humans learn the joys of being an animal, for a temporary amount of time that is. I wasn't trying to hurt anyone." the old man explained.
Alex said, "Well, I do like being a girl cocker spaniel."
"I thought you would." Mr. X. said. "My name is Douglas, by the way."
Nutmeg asked, "Since we found Mr. X., what would you like to do now?"
Alex got an idea. "How about a game of tag? I've never really ran with these dog legs before."
"You're 'it' then!" Nutmeg laughed as she ran. Alex chased after her enjoying her time as a cocker spaniel.
