most companies do that with their products... it's called Planned Obsolescence

The most insidious part of planned obsolescence is that it doesn't have to be the least bit intentional per se since more durable devices generally cost more resources and expertise to make.

I was curious why Apple would spend the extra resources thereof; probably something about an e-commerce ecosystem taking a 30% cut that'd be lost if someone went to Android.

the thing is that people think too deeply about stuff like this. i don't think it matters. those devices can be built thicker (and smaller) (+with partitions), which would make them much easier to maintain and not break. the battery could be replaceable once more as well.

intentional or not, it is known that a lot of apple's (and others) design choices are bad. a lot of that results from their design goals. so in a way it is deliberate, as it's inherent to the designs that "people want" (thin and large = horrible structure). """Longevity by Design""" would not be as necessary in the first place, if they used basic practices of good structure.

though all of what i said is also true for non-apple devices. it is true for almost all modern consumer devices, including androids. laptops are pretty bad now too.

Both consumers and manufacturers are unfortunately complacent about repair. Hopefully that'll change.
