And God,
Please let the deer on the highway
get some kind of Heaven.
Something with tall soft grass and sweet reunion.
Let the moths in porch lights
go someplace with a thousand suns
that taste like sugar and get swallowed whole.
May the mice in oil and glue
have forever dry, warm fur and full bellies.
If I am killed for simply living,
let death be kinder than man.
The Crime of Being Small, by Althea Davis
Something kind of different for me, I saw this poem the other day and got inspired to make some art to go with it. I got up first thing and spent 2-3 hours sketching it up, because I knew if I waited I would end up not actually doing it. I only get so much motivation and time for personal projects and I usually have a list of things I want to do, but only a small few ever get through, and I usually favor character art. I'm glad I pushed myself to get it done though, I think it carries a good message of empathy that is not often given to the small creatures, especially the ones we call pests. They are simply trying to live their lives just like we are, and are no less deserving of a chance to survive. Even if you cannot be kind, you don't have to be cruel.
