Brian Griffin - The Beast Of Rhode Island
Dated 05/06/2012
"Tonight on Channel Five News - a terrifying giant beast is rampaging through Rhode Island. Nobody knows quite where this colossal canine has come from, but there are rumours that he was seen bursting through the roof of a house in Spooner Street, Quahog.
"In other news, a baby with a strange head has reported the theft of a growth ray. Police say they still have no leads.
"And now sports. Ollie?..."
He's never far away from my gallery these days, is he?
This is the fourth and final picture of my 'June 2012' batch, and it features Brian Griffin making a long overdue macro appearance. I had previously suggested a growth scenario for Brian in 2010's 'Road To The Macroverse' - and of course played with size differences in last year's animation 'Road To The Microverse' - but I thought it would be fun to see the big white doggy taking those chunky feet of his on a proper city rampage.
Of course, there's a reason why I don't often do full city rampage pictures. They're a PAIN IN THE ARSE.
Anyone familiar with the real Rhode Island might realise that the city depicted in this picture is actually a rough approximation of Providence, RI - one of the real cities on which Quahog is based. I decided it would add an extra dimension to the picture, so I worked from a few aerial photos of the city to produce this setting, albeit by no means 100% accurate. In doing so however, I pretty much tripled the workload for the picture, not only facing the usual painstaking process of drawing a detailed city but trying to stay faithful to the landmarks and layout of a real life location. If it hadn't come out quite so nicely, I'd be wondering why the hell I'd even bothered.
Furthermore, in a break from my normal method, most of this picture was drawn with a tablet rather than pencil. In attempting to keep with the Family Guy cartoon style, I wanted to give the picture a digitally inked appearance. Brian was the only thing to be drawn out on paper, after which I used Adobe Illustrator's Live Trace to ink the scanned image. Everything else was drawn in PaintShop Photo Pro and later traced in Illustrator - an awkward and time-consuming process, but it seems to have worked reasonably well.
As for Brian himself, I pretty much had to improvise on the face, given that you don't often see him looking down like this! I didn't want to break too much from his Family Guy proportions, but I did want to make him look reasonably chunky and heavy - after all, he does make for a rather fun giant.
So that's the end of my latest batch of work. Hope you like all the pics - and whilst I can't promise any more will be forthcoming for a while, I can only say: Watch this space!

Well my postgraduate course is nearly finished (thankfully) but I'll be jobhunting again thereafter, so plenty of stress and worry to look forward to...
Heh! Anyway, thanks Draxi! And yes, I can tell why feet squashing through buildings and cars would appeal to you...

Yeah, that animation covered a lot of ground... though not nearly as much as Brian is covering in this picture.
Besides, I don't think you have to be a fan of the show to appreciate the character! I've certainly never watched Digimon but I've drawn enough of them over the years!

LOL! Really? Any buildings in particular? I was hoping someone would say something like that! Hopefully the thought will stay with you whenever you're on campus...
*Looks on Google Maps*
Hang on - have I accidentally drawn Brown? And here I had no idea that was in Providence...! Does this make you an Ivy League man?

Yup, I go to Brown ^^. And it seems you inadvertently drew the campus ;). The most prominent feature you drew was the sciences library, which is the tall cement building with the pillars on the corners, surrounded by the smaller red-brick buildings. I study there a lot actually....What a site that would be, huh? ;)
The red-brick building immediately in front of the sciences library is the chem and geochem building. So, if Brian's feet don't destroy RI, the exploding chemistry department will xD I believe you may have drawn my dorm as well! Way too awesome xD
Again, thanks so much for drawing this!! I can't tell you how exciting it is to look at this picture xD. Very well done as well :).

Lol - I actually ended up looking through the campus maps on the Brown website earlier and indeed found the Science Library, and the GeoChem building and Barus & Holley - all of which I remembered drawing! I dare say you'd recognise a lot of the other stuff around it too!
Heck - and there was me thinking everything I was drawing on that side of the river was just residential stuff...

Yup, I see you drew Barus & Holley as well! :) Last semester I took an astronomy course in the physics department, and we would have lab sessions on top of Barus & Holley. I totally wouldn't mind having a super macro Brian blocking my view ;).
And yeah, funny how things turn out like that sometimes! :) I'm sure cityscapes are ridiculously difficult to draw xD.

Yeah, I am sure it would also contains some other inspiring tales... like it's okay to take advantage of blind women, from making her think she's being mug so you can be a "hero" to her as well as take pictures of her without her noticing... I am sure Brian is waving his finger to anyone who disagree with him on that, which is so his style: If he can't convince people they're wrong... he uses brutal force instead...
Yeah - to be honest, when I'm thinking of Brian, I just block out the memory of all the crappy storylines they've given him in recent seasons. They've made him into a bit of a loser/jerk, which is not how he used to be - or how I like to think of him...!
I think the first couple of seasons were actually really good. Since then it's been patchy, and I'd say the only good episode from the last couple of years was "Road To The Multiverse" - though to be fair, that was perhaps the best one they've ever made.
Fictionally, Quahog. In reality, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Provid.....,_Rhode_Island
