What is Bisexuality?
Each bisexual can determine for themselves what their bisexuality means to them, but in sum, bisexuality is usually defined as attraction to all genders. Bisexual people are capable of being attracted to women, men, and anyone beyond the gender binary.¹
Some bisexuals have preferences for one gender or another, some bisexuals have preferences that change day to day, and some bisexuals have no particular preference at all! Bisexuality has been prevalent throughout history, and it is just as natural for humans to be bisexual as it is for humans to be hetero or homosexual.²
History of the term Bisexual - “But ‘bi’ means ‘two’!”
Many misconceptions and confusion about bisexuality arise from the origins of the term. In the DSM-I, published in 1952, the term “bisexual” was used to refer to “attraction to both sexes”, and was incorrectly referred to as "a paraphilia”, much like how lesbianism and male homosexuality were viewed at the time.³ Psychologists’ views of homosexuality and bisexuality were very warped back then, and they were not aware of identities beyond the western gender binary, (much less the fact that homosexuality and bisexuality aren’t “paraphilias”).
A lot of bisexual people at that time viewed the “two sexes/genders” philosophy as old and inaccurate, and they felt that it erased people beyond the gender binary.⁴ Thus, the term “bisexual” has often been historically defined by bisexual activists as “attraction regardless of gender”,⁵ “love for human beings”, and “attraction not being limited by gender”.⁶
The Goal of Bisexual-Furs
I, the creator of this account, am a transgender bisexual guy who has been involved in the furry fandom for around 5 years now, ever since I was 12 years old. I have found that despite our community being touted as "accepting" and "LGBT friendly", I often see misconceptions and misunderstandings of the bisexual identity being spread around by our own members more times than I can count. Many non-bisexuals, inside the fandom and out, tend to view us as “only attracted to two genders”, “needing to have a preference to be bisexual”, “promiscuous”, “not inclusive to transgender or nonbinary people”, “unfaithful”, and other various, inaccurate assumptions about us based on our identity. In fact, when people ask “What is bisexuality?”, they don’t often go to bisexual people themselves to answer their questions, and often get warped answers borne of misunderstanding and lack of knowledge. This high level of stigma around the bisexual label has made a lot of people who are attracted to multiple genders ashamed to even consider identifying as bisexual. In fact, I was too for a portion of my life, due to this level of stigma and lack of knowledge and education in our own community surrounding bisexual people.
However, my goal with this account is to combat this. I want to create a safe place for bisexual people to express their pride without fear of shunning, and to teach our fandom more about what bisexuality really means and the history behind who we are. I hope that with this group, more people can become welcoming of our identity, and more informed about us as a vast and beautiful community of people. :) I think, by educating our fellow furs about bisexuality, we can make more progress as a community.

"Bisexuality is a whole, fluid identity. Do not assume that bisexuality is binary or duogamous in nature: that we have "two" sides or that we must be involved simultaneously with both genders to be fulfilled human beings. In fact, don't assume there are only two genders. Do not mistake our fluidity for confusion, irresponsibility, or an inability to commit. Do not equate promiscuity, infidelity, or unsafe sexual behavior with bisexuality. Those are human traits that cross all sexual orientations. Nothing should be assumed about anyone's sexuality, including your own."

Happy Pride Month
Hey everyone, it's Lupin. :) I've been taking a silent mental health break from this group, because I've honestly been dealing with a lot with my own brain, my neighbors, my life, etc. But, I promise this group isn't dead, and I don't plan for it to be anytime soon. By the way, sorry for any typos I might make in this journal; It is currently 3 AM where I live, and I stayed up all night to get things done, including writing this for you all. ^_^
With that out of the way, I want to wish every member of bisexual-furs a happy 2021 Pride month!
As a summary for people who are new to the LGBT community, as well as non-Americans, Pride month is celebrated as a tribute to the Stonewall riots, which effectively kicked off the LGBT rights movement in America. In sum, the Stonewall riots were a series of protests starting on June 28th, 1969 when the New York Police violently raided Stonewall Inn. Stonewall Inn was a gay bar that served as a safe place for LGBT and GNC people to express themselves, as well as a safe place for runaway or homeless youth to stay. When the police found out there was homosexual and transgender expression within Stonewall Inn, they raided the bar, inflicting violence against patrons, arresting 13 people, and even forcing transgender people into genital checks. It went on and on, and the LGBT patrons grew tired of being discriminated against, and they were tired of being harassed by the corrupt police force. They all teamed up as one, and protested against the police for 6 days. Their brave protests in the face of corrupt authority is still remembered to this day.
They fought to prove that LGBT people deserve just as many rights as anyone else, and that we don't deserve to be harassed and criminalized for existing. To this day, we pay tribute to those in the Stonewall protests. We honor our gay, lesbian, bisexual, and trangender siblings, who fought tooth and nail for Americans' rights today. And we continue to fight across the world to decriminalize being LGBT.
In 71 countries, as I write this in 2021, gay people are still discriminated against, and are considered illegal. And even in America, laws are still being passed that criminalize being transgender. We need to continue the fight our LGBT elders in 1969 started, to help our siblings all across the world and help them fight for their rights. That is what I believe celebrating pride month is about.
The American people in 1969 fought for the wellbeing of LGBT Americans to this day.
We need to fight, now, for the wellbeing of LGBT people across the world, so that one day they may live without knowing discrimination.
Express your pride, and remember you are of an honorable community. Your LGBT elders fought for you to express your pride, and they would be so proud of you for being yourself. So wave your flag, and don't bow to corrupt authority. 🏳️🌈
