The Binding Of Isaac is a critically acclaimed indie rogue-like dungeon crawler, released on September 28th, 2011 on the indie animation and game website Newgrounds.com and developed by Edmund McMillen and Florian Himsl using Macromedia Flash. Featuring McMillen's odd, morbid sense of humor, twin-stick controls, and a steep difficulty curve, it took the market by storm. The game recieved an expansion, known as The Wrath Of The Lamb, on May 28th, 2012, adding what amounts to the second half of the base game in terms of content. The music for the original game and its expansion was composed by Danny Baranowsky.
The game was remade and released by the indie developer team Nicalis, with Edmund McMillen in a supervising position, on November 4th, 2014. Titled The Binding Of Isaac: Rebirth, the remake boasts content from both the base game and the Wrath Of The Lamb expansion, with additional features initially cut due to the limitations of Flash. Due to its massive critical success, Rebirth eventually earned its own expansions: Afterbirth (released on October 30th, 2015), Afterbirth+ (released on January 3, 2017), and finally, Repentance (released on March 31st, 2021). These expansions boast massive amounts of new content, such as new characters, new game modes, new and updated items, tweaked mechanics, fixed synergies, and long-awaited modding tools. The music for Rebirth and its expansions was composed by Ridiculon.
Rebirth, and all of its expansions, have also been made available on Steam, the PlayStation 4, and the Nintendo Switch.
The player controls the titular character, Isaac, and accompanies him through a perilous journey through the depths of the basement as he attempts to escape from his fanatical Christian mother, who believes she hears the voice of God demanding Isaac's sacrifice.
